i couldn't get a good pic of the cover but here it is anyway:
A while ago the editor of Broken Pencil asked me to write an article about how I came to start Ax Wound. I wrote it & just got a check for $100 bucks in the mail & the new issue!! It is the horror issue of course!

01:24 pm - Grindhouse... (better late then never?)
One of the things I am often very sad about is not having had the chance to go see Grindhouse on the big screen. I had numerous plans to go and each time something huge and drastic got in the way. For some reason the universe decided for me that I wouldn't be seeing it how it was meant to be viewed. Sad.
After a long long wait I finally have see both Death Proof & Planet Terror. (I think it's a scam that this wasn't released as one film with all the fake previews ..but i won't get into that right now... but it REALLY pisses me off).
Ok- so-I have to admit I was not a huge fan of Death Proof. I thought it was slow & not sure what it wanted to be doing with itself. Flat out....I just was not entertained. I usually LOVE Tarantino's witty and unique dialogue and didn't listen when people told me that this film was boring because "it was all these women talking." I thought people were just being ignorant and truly thought when I watched it I wouldn't agree. I felt really shocked when I started watching it and realized it wasn't that "it was all these women talking..." it was that it was "all these women talking but not saying one fucking thing." Tarantino should sorta be ashamed of himself....(i mean that in a loving way because I still totally adore his work).... but really. He knows this genre so well and he should have really stepped up to his own challenge. Instead I feel very cheated. I know he had good intentions, I know he is a fan of feminist horror film theory, I know he is aware of his female characters...but he just made them so drab and blah. You know what....scratch that. He just made a MOVIE really drab and blah. There you go. It wasn't even the female charactors...it was ALL THE charactors...it was just not good. Straight up.
But QT...I STILL FUCKING LOVE YOU.
Oh, and I did totally enjoy the last scene (the car chase with the female stunt drivers) but that was not even enough to save the whole long ass mess that came before it. I am a big Tarantino fan and thought if anything he could pull this off but I was very very wrong. What up, QT?????
Planet Terror on the other hand MORE then made up for Death Proof . I was totally shocked that I adored this film because I am so much more of a QT fan then a Rodriquez fan. In fact I actively dislike Sin City and thought the only good directed moment was the car scene QT shot. I just thought I would have such an opposite reaction to these two films!! Rodriguez never did much for me one way or the other,this was the first time I truly felt entertained by something he did. I felt like he got what the project of Grindhouse was suppose to be ....I feel like he captured the spirit of it (in a hollywood way of course)....I feel like one could have just thrown Death Proof away and no one would really notice or care. Wow, that is harsh!! DP didn't even look like an old b-movie. Not even for a second.
I even dare say Planet Terror is one of the best zombie/horror movies I have seen in a while. I thought it had a great visual asthetic, i thought the charactors had purpose, and I adored the grainy-stripper-red lipstick-tassels-sexual-over-exaggerated-slaughter-meat-zombie-late night-foggy look. Plus,good corny and humorous dialog and it was decent gross out jelly zombie mushy grossness (however- sometimes I must admit it looked way to much like computer generated effects....that would be my main complaint actually). And did anyone else notice this is the second movie to come out recently where zombies are killed with a helicopter blade (Planet Terror and 28 weeks later)....This will never compare to the Lawnmower in Dead Alive.
Planet Terror saved Grindhouse. It fully embraced the genre and was a ton of fun....Rose Mcgowan was a great action hero... I always adore her choice of roles....

Starting today I am going to try and read as many V.C. Andrews books as I can stand. I think writing something about her books for the Ax Wound "family" issue would be fitting since that seems to be a pretty common theme in all her books. Plus, I always wanted to read her & never got around to it. I saw FLowers in The Attack when I was younger & remember liking it. I bought that book today & will see what i think. I didn't realize how fucking prolific she was!!
Anyone here have thoughts on her books?

OH MY GAWD. I am beyond excited to say that the website for Ax Wound was featured in the Roadkill section of Rue Morgue Magazine!! I knew this might happen but wasn;t gonna believe it till i saw it! And today I saw it! and i am so jumpy!! It is the smallest little blurb but it means SOOS OSOOSO much to meee.

The REVENGE ISSUE of Ax Wound is all finished and will be photocopied as soon as I get my paycheck. On Monday I will scan the cover and post it here! I think it looks pretty good and the content is awesome, you guys are so amazing!
In case you didn’t know there will be a second Revenge issue, as there was just to much content for one issue, I also know there are people who wanted to write a revenge piece but didn’t have a chance yet. So, if you missed writing for this one you still can submit for the second Revenge issue! I'd really love to have reviews of Baise Moi by as many people as possible and I don't have any yet. So, add that to your netflix ;)
I am going to experiment with doing muliple issues at once. I feel like the reason it took me so long to get this issue out was not setting clear deadlines for myself or others. I am going to start forcing myself to be strict about that so things get out when they are supposed to and I don’t have to drag out one issue a year. So, here are the themes for the next three issues all due out before the end of the year.
Please write on anything within these themes and whichever I get most of first will come out next. (Also, if your interest doesn't fall into these topics then PLEASE PLEASE submit anyway!!!!!!)
NOTE: Alot of movies fall into multiple catagories and that is totally fine. For example, one could write about Rosemary's Baby in both the WITCHES issue and the REPRODUCTION issue.
WITCHES & BITCHES
This issue will explore the roles of feminism/womanhood and witchcraft in horror as well as the role of “bitch” in horror. Anything you feel fits in with these two concepts!
THE FAMILY & REPRODUCTION ISSUE
This issue will look at the role of Family in horror. We all know the Monstrous Mother of Psycho, Friday the 13th, Mother’s Day, etc. A lot of monster/slashers are damaged in some way by a mother character who turns her son into a psycho. Freeland talks about how women are blamed for being the cause of the killers rage and then subsequentily his victims. Much to explore here! Also, what about children in horror? Fathers? What about Leatherface’s family? What about the Stepfather films? Lots to look at on this subject.
As for Reproduction: It seems these days there are lots of images of Monstrous Birth: Hills Have Eyes 2, Pro-Life, Imprint (which deals with abortion as well). Monsters have often needed human females to inpregnant and carry on there species- this is a common theme. Articles can be about anything surrounding the themes of reproduction in horror. “Reproduction” can also be interpreted in a completely different way. It can be about the Remaking of horror film...be creative!
THE QUEER HORROR ISSUE
This issue will explore GLBT themes within horror!
